Our local area has a lot of history, historical societies, and even small museums; but I've never to most of them.<br /><br />For me the biggest reason boils down to interest. Although European settlement in my area dates back to 350 (or so) years ago, most of the local small communities were founded around the Civil War or industrial revolution, that's just too "new" to really pique my interest.<br /><br />A close second, are all the reasons you've already listed. All of the local history societies that I've been to are quite boring places.
